Hi all! Thanks for coming over and checking out the new forum. It's not got as many bells and whistles as our old ship, but she'll get along, I think. Please take a look around and see what you think. Register, try it out, and let me know what you think in this thread.
A couple of things: if we decide we like it, we'll move the horatians.org domain over here. Also, we'll pay for ads to go away. I'm going to pay for the domain stuff, but I'll take up a collection for the no-ads. It shouldn't be too expensive.
Thanks for your patience so far.

Hey, I made it & did it all on my iPhone. There is an app for pro boards. It is 2.99 US dollars. We can see where we go from here. Like you got your regular avatar, Mags. :-)

You can go into your profile and upload an avatar. It looks like they have some toys to play with there, too.
Also, if (like me) it converted your username to all lower case, you can change that in the profile as well, if you want to.
I saw the mobile apps. Didn't know they were paid. Oh well. Hopefully it will at least work in the browsers on mobile devices. Don't pay for anything yet, we might end up somewhere else.

Well, I have to say that I've found my way around quite quickly. Don't know about alternatives but this has made a good impression.
ETA: I'm using Chrome and it seems fine to me.

Doing things on the old forum makes it easy to figure this one out.
I've got a few of the old comedy things from the old-old forum saved on my hard drive. That makes me think -- are there any threads that we especially wish to preserve? Now would be the time, whether we move or not. Just to make sure someone still has them later.

FreeForums is more than good enough. One of my other "homes" moved over here as well, incidentally in its 3rd incarnation, after years of trouble.

I've yet to set up my avatar but seems pretty straight forward. I'm using my iPhone but on their mobile site not the app and it looks really good.
Going to try setting up my avatar.

Neato! I am sure that ProBoards has add ons and skins that you can change the look and banners of the forum, as well as add more smilies!

Ceri, at the bottom of the page, it says desktop. I was able to put an avatar using my iPhone.

Yep, there are hacks and things to fix up the forum. We can even add smileys. I am not putting a lot of effort into it right now, but do please play around, start threads (you don't have to say anything important), do what you would do on Horatians. Try setting up signatures and that sort of thing.
Just be aware that the test stuff will probably go away if we end up staying here.

Hello All. I see horatians here who've been AWOL for quite a while. It surely puzzles me why I've not had any problems accessing anything on horatians while so many of us have been shut out ... it makes me wonder if I've been doing something wrong. Good to see you back Mr. Hornblower.

Is anyone seeing any ads at all? Maybe they wait till we hit a certain threshold? Or maybe it's because I have AdBlock turned on? I haven't seen any yet.

mmt, the problems have something to do with caching and the PHP sessions. It is hard to fix a bug that is not easily reproducible. I'm told other communities using the same software had the same problems, and the people who program it were not willing to fix it. I didn't have any problems with desktops, but couldn't login with my phone. (I can now with an Android version of the Ctrl + F5 thing.)
We had planned to install new software and give it a whirl, but MG is having some real-life issues right now and couldn't work on it. I thought this might be a good solution as we won't have to depend on one person to support it. ProBoards will handle all the backend stuff. We just enjoy it.
The web has switched that way. Back when I started blogging, hosted blogs all stunk and the only way to have a good blog site with lots of customization was to host your own install. I did for years and then had all kinds of problems with it. I eventually switched over to WordPress' hosted solution and have been really happy with it.
I feel like only sites that are really large and are trying to make money need to host their own stuff. Everywhere else you can use hosted scripts. We looked at hosted forums a few years ago and they were all really lacking. I have to say I'm impressed with how far things have come. Why make things more difficult for ourselves?
