The way it was explained vis-a-vis the DVRing, they do look at the numbers of people who watch later, but ABC didn't get anything from the DVR watchers. They don't own the show (it is produced by Warner Brothers, I think) so they only get money from ads on the live broadcast. I think that's what put it over the canceled line. They don't get anything even from the people who buy episodes on iTunes or Google Play, and they don't get advertising revenue from people who DVR.
ETA: Apparently some people called Netflix corporate and they were getting annoyed! They said just let customer service know if you're interested. And apparently all the CS people know what's going on and someone said they were thinking about watching the show together to see why so many people are interested. The campaign is definitely getting noticed.
