How cool is this?! A tall ships race with 40 ships in Quebec. Figured I'd post this for anyone in the area. RDV 2017

That sounds like a good excuse to visit Quebec City....if you actually needed one.....there will be a lot of fun events across Canada in 2017 as it is the 150 anniversary of Confederation......

Liz, since you've been there, what's a good place to stay? ~Phizz Depends on how much money you want to spend......the most famous hotel (and most photographed hotel in the world) is the Chateau Frontenac, which dominates the skyline, however, it is very pricey. It is a grand old railway hotel and even if you don't stay there, you should at least try to have a drink in the lobby bar, which has a fantastic view of the river......all the main chains have hotels there, plus there are a lot of small independent hotels of all price ranges which are good and reasonable. The main thing is to try for somewhere in the old part of the City in either Upper or Lower Town, or just outside the City walls, like near the Plains of Abraham. (There is the Chateau Laurier, not to be confused with the Chateau Frontenac's sister hotel in Ottawa, which is right at the top of the Plains, right near Porte St Louis, the main City gate. It is a newer hotel, which looks reasonable). Quebec City is a walking city......it has very narrow streets, a lot of which are one way, so I wouldn't try trying to drive it. Walk it and poke down narrow little alleyways......
Chateau Frontenac: www.fairmont.com/frontenac-quebec/ Quebec City Official Tourism: www.quebecregion.com/en/ (When searching hotels, stick to the ones that say 'Borough of La Citie'......any others are too far out of the historic area.)
Cheers

If memory serves, you could practically watch the Parade of Sail from a window (pointed in the right direction) at the Chateau Frontenac. I believe it's a Fairmont hotel now? Could possibly be quite spendy. But I seem to recall it overlooks the river at about where the cruise ships dock. I mean, I remember seeing a cruise ship. We have been discussing a moot in Quebec City (I want to go back there SOOOO MUCH). Hmm. Don't let me organize it. LOL ETA after going back and reading earlier posts--we went to the Plains of Abraham (it was a one-day bus trip) and I do remember hotels there. That is more or less the high point of the city. But QC is amazing--it's like you're suddenly plunked into medieval Europe. I could just walk around there forever. ETA the second: here's an album of photos from my trip to Montreal and Quebec City: goo.gl/photos/EnDxw9ymocgyTpzGAIn this photo, the red castle-like building at the very top is the Chateau Frontenac. It sort of overlooks everything. ETA Absolutely The Last: This regatta is the same group of events that includes the Boston stop that I mentioned in Erie.

Yes, the Chateau Frontenac is a Fairmont hotel.......from the bar I mentioned in a previous post, you can see down river (aka East) as ships approach. Your picture is great for showing the perspective of Lower Town and Upper Town. The building in the front is in Lower Town. It also has a traditional red metal roof, which snow and ice won't stick to . The Chateau Frontenac, with a traditional green copper, which sits up on top of a 300 ft cliff (thus the great views).....One thing to make sure you take, depending on the time of year, is a knapsack or large tote to carry a jacket, sweater or sweatshirt in, because, with the height of the cliff, the temperature can be appreciably cooler in Upper Town than Lower Town.....oh, and you don't have to climb the cliff....there is the Funicular (elevator) which costs a loonie a ride and comes up right near the Chateau.......

So is anyone interested in this? I found a possible hotel. I would be willing to call some hotels but please don't ask me to do anything else. But I would love to go to Quebec City with my Horatian friends! Even if we don't do it the same week as the regatta.

That hotel would be an excellent choice.....it is in the Walled City, in Upper Town, so walking everywhere would be very practical......it is a few blocks from the Chateau Frontenac, and the train station (although I wouldn't recommend walking from the train station, as it is up a bloody great hill.....)

Yeah, the location is great, and I thought since it was July we would want a pool. ;-) I don't know if it gets hot there.

Yeah, the location is great, and I thought since it was July we would want a pool. ;-) I don't know if it gets hot there. Quebec City in July is usually in the upper 70's, 80s.....it can also get very humid........
Something to keep in mind, next year is Canada's 150th anniversary, so it could be a very busy summer, plus Quebec City is always crowded in the summer anyway, so anticipate prices being higher, and reservations harder to get......while it would be spectacular to be there on Canada Day (1 July), it would be packed......
Cheers
