I love the Age of Sail as portrayed in Hornblower. I love the mechanics of sailing and sextant navigation. I love the splendour and elegance of the uniforms and the boldness and pride that they represent. I love the thrill of hard won victory, the camaraderie, the hierarchy, the ingenuity. I love the knots and the squalls, the hats and the swords, the polite addresses, the hands clasped behind the back, the pacing on deck, the bells, the roll of the waves, the sea air, the cannon shot and the pistol smoke.
I'm currently on leave and looking forward to returning to work next week to collect my half-read copy of The Young Hornblower, so foolishly left behind!

Hello unbushed. You may be caught in the same trap that caught me almost 20 years ago. After seeing seasons 1 and 2 of Hornblower on TV and realizing that there were books, I started scouring used bookstores for copies of Forester's novels because I just had to have my own; no library copies for me. Patrick O'Brian was next to add to my bookshelves, then Dudley Pope, Alexander Kent, Julian Stockwin, David Donachie, Dewey Lambdin and Richard Woodman. There is also the entertaining Naomi Novik if you're prepared to accept dragons and the Age of Sail.
Happy reading.

Hi unbushed! Sorry we didn't greet you sooner...I think we have summer malaise around here!
I love all things nautical now. It's a fun learning experience. Welcome aboard!
