Well, sort of.
Just sighted Ciarian Hinds in the movie production of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.
Quite a versatile fellow.

Just sighted Ciarian Hinds in the movie production of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.
He also was in "Amazing Grace" - one of the very best movies ever, if you ask me. It's just a pity that this film didn't get the international recognition it would have deserved.
Mr. Hinds also appeared in "Game of Thrones" (can't wait to watch the new season - Jaime Lannister in particular).
I do like the Phantom a lot, have seen it on stage in London, Vienna and New York (and of course I read the book), but I'm not too sure about the movie. Gerard Butler is far too good-looking for the Phantom. And they let him look good.
Another "connection": Emmy Rossum (Christine) was with Ioan in "Happy Now".
I've also never seen this specific version of "Persuation" before, but I surely should look for it.

This version of Persuasion is epic. Especially The Letter (as QMM will tell you, among Friends of Jane, that's all the identification needed). Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds are great. Also, our belovedly snotty Major Edrington plays the scoundrel William Walter Elliot. Definitely watch this.

Lady Barbara says: Emmy Rossum! I confess, I've forgotten her name! And didn't you just see her "Happy Now" looks in her Christine? I was silently giggling to myself, enjoying at least Christine if not the rest of the movie. Must find a copy of Happy Now somewhere... Haven't seen the film for ages!

As opposed to The Latter, meaning the latest incarnation with the darling Rupert Penrys-Jones as Captain Wentworth. Not his fault that "The Kiss," which, was not only interminable in its execution, but had one running to the nearest lab in search for the cure to halitosis. Not to mention a bottle of shampoo for our heroine. I despair, I really do. Otter

Sorry ladies, I am coming incredibly late to this, but I just wanted to say that that version of Persuasion is fantastic. It's probably my favourite Austen adaptation of all times, and yes, that includes the Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice. Persuasion is my favourite Austen novel, but I wasn't entirely satisfied with the most recent adaptation - I found the screenplay and photography a bit generic, and somehow the actors, while very good on their own, did not click for me. But the 1995 Persuasion is gorgeous. It's gritty and direct and terribly passionate, and oh boy! Ciaran Hinds can wear a u-nee-form.

I wasn't entirely satisfied with the most recent adaptation THEY RUINED THE LETTER. What kind of sick, twisted people DO that?!? Yes, the '95 version is sublime. I feel like it was made by people who really love the novel. That's not always the case.

That was about my reaction. Also, Ciaran Hinds' way of saying 'You pierce my soul' gets all the sighs from mine. Lydia

I prefer the 90s version too. Nothing wrong with Rupert Penry-Jones. It was that sprinting through Bath and that INTERMINABLE prelude to a kiss that bothered me.
Has anyone seen the PHANTOM OF THE OPERA Ciaran in it?
Yours Aye,
Diane
PS Can't say I really care for the 70s version of Persuasion either.

PS Can't say I really care for the 70s version of Persuasion either. Yeah it's a bit weird - I can see the really vivid sets were the norm in the 70s, but it's a bit too cleaned up for my taste too. That's something that's true of a lot of Austen adaptations actually - Sense and Sensibility by Ang Lee (the one with Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet) is superbly written and acted, but too pretty-pretty - I just don't get the despair of the Dashwoods' situation across at all. The 1995 Persuasion did this amazing thing of casting relatively common-looking people in slightly shabby surrounding which worked really well with the generally sad feeling of the book. Lydia

Re: the 70s Persuasion: Anne Elliot's GREEN! PLAID! DRESS! And I'm pretty sure my sister had that same hairdo for her senior prom in 1971. Also, rather than being kind of depressed and beaten-down, Anne seemed like she'd been dipping into the laudanum.

Seems like Anne was also dipping into Loretta Lynn's wardrobe and coiffure.
