LittlePal just sent me this link. I haven't been here too often in the last couple of months, as we've been dealing with family issues, so forgive me if it's already been shared. linkLooks very angsty, and Jamie looks unbelievably hot... or believably hot if you're a Crumpeteer! (I wrote that without really thinking about it... 'hot'... geddit? ) Can't wait to see this! PTP

You guys. This is going to be an article full of feelings. And more importantly, of spoilers. So if you haven't seen the Smoke, don't read. But if you have, hold my hand while I go WOAH.
* * * * * * So ages ago I came off a train on the Bakerloo line and saw this electronic billboard full of smoke and I was like 'ISN'T THAT THE CRUMPET' looking adorably sooty and with his angsty scrunched up face. Gotta check it out, I said. And then I got busy. And I didn't.
Fast forward to today. Rainy day and I am stuck in the house and not feeling like revising Palaeography even though my exam's in a week, and I have to stick around because the landlord needs to show the house, and so I decide today is the day to watch The Smoke. I mean, only one episode and then I'm revising, honest, guv'.
Except. I have drunk down the series in one go, just in time to discover that IT'S BEEN CANCELLED. And that, in a weird way, is ok, because it makes even more painful a series which feels very much like a splinter down your throat.
I am speechless at the narrative talent of the writer who takes the biggest cliché in the book, the heroic firefighter rescueing a baby, and turns it into a seven minutes long almost unwatchable hyperrealistic scene of destruction in a fire. I am awed at the relentlessly grim lighting that makes everything look like a sinkhole of despair. And I am giving Jamie Bamber a standing ovation for tackling the most difficult and nuanced character of his career.
I am awed at the bravery of the actor who takes on Kev Allister, a guy of undoubted bravery and self-sacrificial spirit (firefighter, you guys) whose life is gutted by the accident that disfigures him and makes him impotent, a distasteful topic which I had not seen tackled since the time of Born on the Fourth of July. Kev goes on to live the series on the sharp edge of a moral razor, saving children, kidnapping dogs, forgiving almost unforgivable treasons, stealing iPods from wounded girls, carving our heart out with his naked despair, and finally and memorably condemning his nemesis to death by fire cold-bloodedly shutting a door in his face.
Lt Kennedy has grown up.

Cancelled, you say ........ diabolical! This single season would save our Jamie hearts from weekly anguish but it would have been interesting to see how Kev's story develops.
