I am all for less movies and more sight seeing at the conventions. Though I would rather see the movies I really like rather than do the first four one year and the other four the next year.
SOOO -- I am thinking it would be best to do this like a five for five.
1. What is your favorite movie of the series.
2. What is your LEAST favorite out of the series.
3. If you only could watch two movies out of the whole series, which ones would that be? (this is difference from number one - for instance, my favorite and the one that I would show people what Hornblower is, are two different movies)
4. Would you also like to view the music videos or additional movies (example: Master and Commander or the Greg Peck version of Hornblower to be shown, too)?
5. Any other questions or comments you want to add - please put here.

I think Greg should ALWAYS be in the rotation!

I think Greg should ALWAYS be in the rotation! Agreed. And I voted for "Mutiny" but consider Mutiny/Retribution to be a single entity. I like the idea of rotating--one year do the first four, the next year do either M/R and/or L/D, and always Greg. Or maybe do one or the other plus Greg plus another movie. Last year we sort of spontaneously agreed we all wanted to watch Amazing Grace, and that was fun and a nice treat.

I was planning on just showing the last four since we saw the first four last year. But it really doesn't make a difference to me. If there's any overwhelming vote I'll show what you want. I'll have all the films with me so we can change things around if need be.
Would you want to skip any of the Ioan HH films for the Gregory Peck HH? Or Skip Mr Peck altogether?
Sandra, I'm assuming when you say include Greg, you mean Greg Wise not Greg Peck, right?
Would we want Amazing Grace, or stil with the HH team. I don't have copy of it but I think someone does since we watch part of it in the conference last year (?)

Greg means Greg(ory) Peck.
And I vote for something else besides Amazing Grace. The fun of it was the spontaneity of doing something different. If we end up arguing over stuff it takes the fun out of it.
ETA: and I appear to be the only one who has voted so far. I really hope this doesn't become a big thing that puts pressure on people and causes arguments. The thinking about this is not to make it all stressful. It's supposed to make it less expensive as the conference room is the biggest expense of the cons and it's not like it used to be when 40-50 people would go. If we concentrate on one movie or set of movies each year, it frees up time and expense of renting the conference room. But at the same time, we use the conference room for hanging out. If there are other gathering places in the hotel, that takes care of the hanging-out situation. Maybe the pool area, or something? If there are tables and chairs there?

I think the poll just went up a short time ago. Maybe that's why there aren't many votes yet. Or maybe it just doesn't matter to most which we view. If it becomes an problem I'll make an executive decision and decide the issue. I am Captain after all. The hotel's lobby also serves as its breakfast area. There are loads of square tablets (whist anyone?) there. Once breakfast is over the tables are empty. The hotel lobby has been renovated since I saw it in October. All fresh and new I'm told. Though I really didn't think it looked bad at all. I thought it was nice actually. The hotel isn't that old. Maybe 10 years at best. The pool area has only lounge chairs if I remember, not tables. There is a small area outside just off the lobby with 2 or 3 tables. I think it's there for smokers mainly. But there's no reason why we couldn't claim it! The hotel doesn't have a restaurant but there's one right next door. Probably 50 feet away. If you order a drink you could hang out there too.

I just made it this morning (3/12/14) and as things go democratically, I thought it would be best to do majority rules. SOO - it the most votes go to, for example -- Mutiny( for Paul McGann and Philip Glenister), Loyalty (for Greg Wise)and the Wrong War (for Sam West) and the majority does want Greg Peck's HH, then those are the four shown.
It's the Libra in me, I like fair, balanced and equal.
I do also think if we do only four movies that DOES let us have free time for other things and does cut expense on the renting of the conference room.
Also if you want the truth, the four movies I would like to see are above because of the reasons above. I think that will be the best to show everything that everyone likes. Hugs to all!

Greg means Greg(ory) Peck. Exactly! If somebody has a non-Hornblower movie they want to share, bring it along and we'll see how the spirit moves us at the time. I'll try to remember my music vids because I missed Oranian Rhapsody in Charleston. It make sense to me to group the Hornblower series by fours, with the split being Before Paul and After Paul. I'd be fine with it being Captain's Choice, too. Otherwise we're going to start having sub-committee meetings and nobody wants that.

I was am going to pack my copies of the music vids after hearing that they weren't shown in Charleston. Gotta have "Oranian Rhapsody!"

If we do 4 Hornblowers, 1 Greg and 1 other surprise film then I probably will need the conference room for 3 nights. Don't want to put to many films in one day since everyone wants a lot of free time for the beach and sightseeing. I think everyone should consider coming in earlier than Wed or staying later one day. We have to do some group stuff together!!!
If most folks get into town at a decent time on Wednesday I could consider showing just one film, maybe Greg's HH?
I like Sandra's idea. Everyone can bring a film they like and then we'll pick what we want. Unless I find something really good instead.

I voted for Wrong War, but that is because I enjoy some Sam West smirkage. However, I have no preference on what movie to watch.

The reason things worked so well in Charleston was because everyone was willing to go with the flow and be flexible. I think the ultimate decision should be up to the captain and don't be upset if things change at the last minute.
If we have limited conference room time, I would prefer to maximize movie time over videos.

If we want to go old school for the wild card movie, how about these boaty movies? Billy Budd Mutiny in the Bounty -take your pick, but maybe the Charles Laughton one Captains Courageous ( on second thought, no) Moby Dick - for the alpha and omega of Gregory Peck on a boat In a newer vein: To the Ends of the Earth - essentially its Bundestag Cumberbund on a lord of the flies-ish boat with a nasty captain. Amazing Grace - besides the obvious reasons, they do look at a boat. Persuasion- because, duh Master and Commander - do I really have to explain?

Oh I love the Ciarian Hinds/Amanda Root version of Persuasion!

I'm never gonna complain about seeing that version of Persuasion. <3 I'll bring the teabags. LOL. (That movie always makes me crave tea!) I have DVDs of both of the non-Mel Gibson Mutiny on the Bountys and the 95 Persuasion, so I can bring 'em all along and we'll fight it out with whatever anyone else brings. Honestly, I feel like deciding now and "voting" on it takes the fun and spontaneity out of it. It's like the old VCR War days and ain't nobody got time for that. Or we can all go play whist and drink port. ETA: If we go Mutiny (hee hee), the Clark Gable/Charles Laughton one is preferable as the Marlon Brando one is like four hours long. It does, however, have the young Marlon Brando in a non-period-correct naval youneeform, and it is a sight to see, having been altered to make the BREECHES TIGHTER OH MY GODFATHERS.
