Hi In Tom McGregor's book "The Making of C.S Forester's "Horatio Hornblower"" there is a page discussing the costume design for the series. You can see in the background some of the drawings they made for the characters. Is there anywhere on the web where I could see the artwork in better quality? Historical costume design is an interest of mine. Also, on a related note, I am the only one who thought that the brown coat thing that Archie Kennedy wore in "The Duel" was really silly looking? The rest of the officers get awesome cloaks, but he has this weird frilly thing. Although, I suppose most of the fashions at that time could be described as "silly" to modern eyes.

Sorry, I can't help you with the artwork - but I love Archie's cloak. It is too large for him and makes him look like a little boy in it

I believe mmt may be the owner of the original artwork having purchased it when some of the items from the series went up for auction a few years ago. She may be able to post it.

I used to have a cute plotbunny I made up as backstory for Kennedy's coat - that it was a family heirloom, hence why it was old-fashioned, and that it was passed down to him by an uncle who went at sea himself but shipwrecked. Archie was fond of him and kept the coat. The family used to make fun of him for it because they all think it's heinous, but also sweet. Lydia

sotl has a good memory. I did come away from the props auction with a collection of costume design stuff in a large book. At the moment the thing is packed away but I'll have a look and see what can be done.

That's because I have a couple of pictures of some of the pages. Unfortunately the quality is not that great.

Not to mention that mmt herself is a masterpiece. You should see the pictures of her in uneeform. She so rocks!

ah yes, I have that book as well....one of our horatian sisters from Australia sent it to me, I cherish it, as I'm afraid that she is now dead as she was battling ovarian and uterus cancers before I never heard from her again. =-(

If memory serves, Archie is wearing a great coat with several shoulder capes. That was actually quite a fashionable item in 1793, and Archie being from a well-to-do family, it makes sense he would own such an item.
The capes are meant to 1. keep off the elements and 2. make the wearer look broader across the shoulders!

Biki, which of our Horatian sisters was that? Please pm me if you think it doesn't belong here. There is a board name missing here that I've been thinking about recently and now wonder if that is her.

HMSCody I think she was before you came aboard Cody, she was with the original A&E boards..... her board name was....... Juju if memory serves me correctly. I think her real name was Judy (?) but her last name was McGrath, that I can remember because McGraths is one of my favorite restaurants and I sent her a t-shirt from one once. She had all sorts of female cancer issues, and her soon to be ex-husband e-mailed me once and even though they were set to divorce he updated me on her health and it wasn't looking good, and then I never heard from either one of them again. That's not who I was thinking of, but I'm still sorry to hear about the troubles of a far-past shipmate of yours.
