Tempting! Verrrrry tempting! She needs work, including new sails, and she's in Gibraltar, so we'd need a crew to bring her to.....wherever we decide, I guess. And then figure out how to use her. How does Kickstarter work anyway? Is it a loan, does everybody own a proportional share, do people just donate?

Wow!
Step One: Purchase the Pickle as one giant water chiller/re-circulator and attach it to a laser system.
Step Two: Call it "Marine Raman spectroscopy."
Step Three: Convince the IRS it was the only way we could perform such research using "green" energy (wind power).
Step Four: Pay massive penalty.

Well, I was joking, mostly. But (because I like to think such crazy things through) let's say we wanted to do it. We could form a foundation that would own the Pickle (and perhaps a certain Big House in Devon? Want to link that, Sandra?). With Kickstarter, the project owner can and usually does give a gift of some kind based on the level of investment. For instance, I've participated in several Kickstarters. Usually they are funding some project. One was to pay for a studio recording of the musical "Austentatious." For my donation, after it was recorded I received a digital copy of the musical. (I think I donated $25.) And my name is on the website, I think, as someone who donated. If you paid more, you got a CD of the recording, and there were gifts on up. Sort of like a PBS pledge drive. So each person who donates gets X sails on the Pickle during the annual Fangirl Meetup. Those who didn't donate would have to pay for his or her sail each year. I think 1 sail per 100 pounds sounds about right.
It should be pointed out that you don't get anything else from a Kickstarter investment--if the product goes on to make money, you don't get anything else. You are investing in the startup costs and get your "pledge drive" gift, and the warm fuzzy feeling of knowing you helped a worthy project get off the ground.

The Big House in Devon is Moreton House, which is reportedly on sale for 500,000 pounds. It's huge; 28 bedrooms. Otter Lasers Inc needs UK headquarters, doesn't it? Read all about it in The Daily Fail (for which I apologize, but it's the only place I could find the info). Mooring for Pickle would be 35 miles away in Bideford.

Cool place, Moreton House. And sheesh, quite a steal at 500K pounds. If that was indeed the going price. I suspect it will sell for about ten times that.
But yeah, a great place to set up a business... with plenty of space for HH headquarters. Not to mention a prime location for a film shoot.
