I'm looking into car rentals, both as a convenient way to get to and from JAX and the hotel and to get around once we are there.
The price for a shuttle is comparable to renting, so I'm wondering if we will really have need of a car while we're there? Will it be useful for helping everyone get around? Is everything more or less within walking distance?

Our hotel is on St Augustine beach. We're a little under 5 miles from the historic district. There is a shuttle service that you can get a 3 day ticket for that picks up at the beach hotels and takes you to all the sites. I was going to contact them about a possible 4 day ticket if anyone was interested.
However, I did look at the pickup schedule. Because our hotel is early in the pick up, you then have to go to all the other hotels before heading into the historic district. Based on their schedule, it's about 45 minutes. Coming back it will be less time. It would be ok when you're on your own, but for the group functions we have to stick to a schedule for group reservations.
I know Phizz is renting a car, and I'll have mine though it only sits 3 others.
I was thinking of renting a mini van like I did in Key West but its pricey. I used it to bring everything to Key West. But if I can fit everything into my car to get there and then rent the mini van once I get to St Augustine it would be a little less. For the week the rental was about $500.
I didn't mind doing it for Key West. But my work situation isn't stable right now. And I'm still trying to get ahold of Spidur for the projector. I hadn't planned on buying one since we've always used hers. The hotel has one to rent but for a little more I could buy one. Not a fancy home theater one, mind you, but one ok for a few hours of movie viewing.
If everyone who's coming could post if they're renting a car here, that would help me decide if I need the mini van, or at least a bigger car.
Thanks

Yep, we're getting a car. Not sure what size yet, but it should accommodate at least two other people.

Once you're in the historic district, everything is walkable.
There's a big parking garage near the visitor's center that charges $10 for all day parking. But no in-out privileges. I would recommend everyone park there. And since it's covered, the cars will stay cool. The majority of things are within 15, maybe 20 minutes walk.
There are smaller metered lots in the historic district but they have time limits of 3 hours. So if you're going to be there for awhile the parking garage is better. You don't have to worry about running back to the meter to put money in. One place we're going to does have one of these smaller lots close by. If we only have that one activity that day then that might be the exception. But again if you go to something else and stay longer than the time limit you'll have to run back for a new ticket.
The visitor center has map of the historic district with all the parking areas. I'm going to try to get them for everyone.
I'll try to re-post the link to the trolley service that has beach pickup. It's on the HHUS 2014 website. There are 2 services but only once goes by the beach.

I, too, am coming on Wednesday and leaving on Monday. I was going to take a cab. My mom said renting would be cheaper, so I checked and with the link below, I could rent a car from Budget rent a car for like $157 ($216 total price). The car could fix 4 comfortably & squeeze in 5. It is worth getting. Mags, if you haven't gotten your ticket yet, maybe we could get the same flight and share the rental fee. Either that or I could rent it and we could just have one extra car. :-) budget rent a car - JAX to St Augustine

I did get my ticket yesterday. I'm arriving around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. I think sotl is getting in around the same time. We were talking about it but hadn't decided yet. It does seem like at least one more car would be useful.

I'll be getting in about 5:00 pm on Tuesday, and leaving on the following Wednesday am, so if anyone needs a ride, I've got one.

I'm getting in around 2:45, will wait for Sandra around 4ish, then we'll head on down to St. Aug's. Anyone else getting in? I should have room for 1 more. Getting economy car, so figure only 3 plus luggage will fit. JAX, by the way. Can't wait to see everyone! Squee!

The only reason I wasn't completely morose at leaving the beach the other week was the knowledge that it wasn't my last beach of the year.

The Cabingirls booked a car already and have offered me a spot in it for Wednesday. We might be able to squeeze another person and luggage. Since they are leaving Sunday I will need some kind soul to give me a ride back to the airport on Monday.
Mags, we had talked about getting a car, maybe we only need to get one for one day for the return to the airport since it looks like we'll have plenty of other vehicles for the weekend.

Ship, what time are you going back on Monday? My flight is in the afternoon. I could have had a really early flight, but I didn't want to wake up early on my last day of vacation. Reply here or PM your info - MAYBE we can do something. Part of the reason I got a car was to help people with coming from the airport.

You are so sweet! I leave Monday at 11:30AM out of Jacksonville. I believe Mags has a similar schedule.
I arrive in Jacksonville Wednesday around 6:30PM. Sorry, I missed some of the earlier posts asking for arrival and departure times.

Jamie, I think we're on the same flight in on Wednesday, though I'm taking the morning flight home on Monday.
Either way, can I beg a ride in from someone? sotl, we'll figure out how to get back to the airport--I'm a little earlier than you, but maybe we can get a shuttle.
