Oh good grief. Really not looking forward to this now. WHy would they do that? I mean the first movie amply showed the material was being stretched way too thin -.-

I think maybe at this point we have to stop thinking of it as 'The Hobbit' and think of it as a general goodies v baddies epic set in Middle Earth, with familiar faces. Ah well, Billy Boyd's wistful, sniffworthy song saying farewell to Middle Earth should settle everyone down and send them out of the cinema clutching soggy tissues...

Just as long as they haven't messed with the storyline so that anybody who died in the book doesn't die here. That would ruin it.

Just saw the first (for me) movie trailer, where Thorin says, "Follow me." After melting, first coherent thought is "Anywhere, baby!"

Well, that was epic! The battle didn't feel too long actually, as there were other bits cut into it so you were returned to events taking place on a human (well, human/Elf/Dwarf) scale periodically which broke it all up a bit.

RA was...well, meltingly amazing, and Martin Freeman turned in a solid performance, and Hugo Weaving in armour is flawless, and I want to grow up to be Cate Blanchett. Also, Thranduil's hair is fabulous. BUT THE DIALOGUE WRITING OHMYGOD. I cringed. A lot. And remembering how good the writing on the original trilogy was, that is a horrible pity Lydia

I think I need to read The Hobbit again to see how many lines from the book made it into the film! I know some of Thorin's last words and Gandalf's parting words were from the book, but that's all I remember. There was so much new plot material that they would be starting from nothing with a lot of it.

I was actually mainly meaning the bits when they talked about relationships...those I found really awful and simply out of step with the rest of the movie. I was just surprised because a lot in the original trilogy was new, and yet very very good. But yes, Thorin's last words were excellent.
On another note, I was very disappointed that after all they made of Tauriel as a supposedly 'empowered' Elvish warrior, she needed not one but TWO men to rescue her every fifteen minutes. -.-

Ha - old habits die hard for writers, Lydia. Perhaps that is the penalty for being an invented character, not one of the originals, who could generally look after themselves a bit more!

He is certainly one seriously good actor.
Spoiler...
When the dragon sickness took hold he was almost starting to speak like Smaug, and the rare lightening of his expression when Bilbo showed him the acorn was like the sun glimmering through cloud. He ought to be in line for some sort of award for this role.
