Saw an article in Entertainment Weekly about "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" being made into a movie!! Oh my aching head!!!!!!

Here's the EW article. I have to say--up to now I've been resolutely ignoring everything to do with this movie (which is actually being filmed) but I kind of am becoming interested now in spite of myself. I reserve the right to go back to ignoring it, though.

Could you please enlighten me? I have heard of the book and friends of mine actually liked it, but I haven't read it myself. What is so bad about it being made into a movie? The book itself or the adaptation?

Speaking for myself--I would rather see someone try to make a really good adaptation of MP or NA rather than wasting resources on this.
If it is, as we are constantly told (including in this fandom) "too expensive" to film period adaptations, then how come this can be done? I guess someone thinks it will be a big hit.
Or, if they're going to film fan fiction (see also: Boredom Comes to Pemberley), please to film GOOD fan fiction.

Forgot all about Pemberly. I would rather watch old television shows anyway. That new network, METV, runs COLUMBO episodes on Sunday. Much more fun. So what if I know how it is going to end...Columbo always catches the villain.

For me it was just the idea of the book!! I guess I'm just an old fogey when it comes to doing a make-over of a classic with silly current fads!

The book was funny for about five chapters, and then it got tiresome. While the article in EW piqued my curiosity slightly, I still think the movie will be the same--funny as an idea and for the first twenty minutes and then I'll be wishing for the zombies to eat my brains and put me out of my misery. I'm back to ignoring, at least until it comes out.

Perhaps it would have been better as a novella, or a short story.

The graphic novel (what I saw of it) was a little better. So maybe it needs the visuals?

So Mags are you going to see this movie? Starts in our area tonight and I'm sorta wanting to see it, based on the trailer I saw last night. Of course the trailer might turn out to be the best part of the movie ~Phizz P.S. My roommate who has heard about all of you guys, was also wondering if our resident Jane Austen authority was going to see this movie!

I always thought they meant 'too expensive to film Naval/sea-going period dramas' rather than too expensive to film any period dramas at all (look at the all stuff they've done lately, which ought to put the lie to its being too expensive to film any period drama at all - Banished, Poldark, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norris, to name three excellent period dramas set during the eighteenth century, which all came out last year. (Although I for one am sadly disappointed by the distinct lack of anything focussing on the Royal Navy.) SF

Talking about other eighteenth century dramas, I have been watching War & Peace and really enjoying the beautiful locations. On the whole, it is very nicely adapted I think. As far as ships are concerned, there is the movie Moby Dick, which I haven't seen myself but it's just another example. Every time I see the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies trailer, I feel the same way I do about a car wreck, I try to look away but can't help myself. lol

As one who has read the book, I will take it on the chin and go see P&P&Z in the theater with my husband, who is a Good Sport. Maybe not today -- possibly next weekend. I will report back to the crew with the lay of the land on my return.
