Mags: Okay, we've been here at proboards for a while. Any decision on #of posts for the different ranks? Yours Aye, Diane (yearning to advance to Captain)

Yours Aye, Diane (yearning to advance to Captain) I think the numbers of posts for rank is the same here as it was on the old SMF board: 25 for midshipman, 100 for Lieutenant, 1000 for Captain. (Which'll mean I'll be extremely unlikely to reach Captain again within the next five years.) SF

Hey, I don't know what a rhumb line is, either. #rating4life
I think I actually reduced the number of posts required for ranks here, because everyone was starting over. That being said, Commander is actually the next rank up...sadly, no Captain for a while yet, I think.
I don't want to lower the ranks just because. There's no fun in achieving it fast and then everyone's at the top, you know?

In these modern times, which types of examinations do people prefer? Which are more effective or true portraits of one's abilities?
Written? Oral? Practical?
Yours Aye,
Diane
PS Anybody know the answer Capt. Hammond's question?

I think a lot depends on what sort of learner a person is, and how they best communicate. Personally, I prefer (and do better in) written examinations.
You may be interested to learn that even today, the Royal Navy requires its midshipmen to pass an oral examination on navigation, seamanship and other skills before they can be considered for promotion.
I think Captain Hammond's question required a manoeuvre such as a club haul (dropping the anchor, swinging around the anchor like a child swinging round a lamppost and then cutting or slipping the anchor cable once facing out to sea again.) He could simply have anchored, but that would risk losing his masts due to the abrupt halt once the cable had run out to its bitter (secured to the bitts) end.
I'm willing to be wrong, of course, being strictly Other Ranks and more interested in the Royal Marines anyway.
