Shipmates, I'd like to make a pence jug to go in the reticule I plan to make to go along with The Dress. Would anyone care to dip into their stash and knit one with me? I don't plan to go at a particular pace (except perhaps slowly). But this would be a good spot to compare notes, share pictures, etc. Here's the link to the pattern: Pence Jug, by Franklin HabitYou can make it out of sock yarn, with #0 double pointed needles American size (that's 2.0 mm or #14 in UK/Canadian knitting). I'm going to use a larger size of crochet cotton. Come on along! As AnneElliott pointed out in the old forums, you'd need a ring to put on the handle, to be able to close this little guy. If anyone has a source for inexpensive plain rings, please chime in. I plan to do mine without beads. Here's a photo of the museum-object original:

That is sheer awesomeness. Can't wait to see the finished products (because you will be posting pictures, right? )! I'm not a knitter but if any of you knitters complete your reticules and have desire to sell them, I may have *ahem* a market for them. Just FYI!

Do you mean to say that if any of us genteel impoverished sorts require additional income, we can pursue womanly activities and earn our keep from them?

[insert laughing smiley, and then a hugging smiley, here] LOL! What I mean to say is that if any of you genteel sorts (impoverished or not!) would like to favor your less artistically-inclined sisters with the fruits of your talents, means would be found to compensate you for such generosity. Indeed, I make no inferences as to the state of anyone's finances (particularly since the outcome of being found wanting in the needle arts means my income is often found wanting, too! ).

Oh uHf, I was just pretending to be an emigre in need of occupation and pin money. I'd do this for my shipmates for fun, or at least for materials.
So far this is a simple knit. If you can knit, purl, increase, and decrease, it's your huckleberry. It's like making a sock, only it won't fit your foot. So knitting shipmates, don't be taken aback by the apparent complexity of this project because it only looks hard.

Oh man, this looks great, but as someone who can only knit scarves, I fear it's way too complicated! But I would love to see pictures or the actual efforts! ~Phizz

I'm about halfway through, with maybe three hours of knitting, and it is really simple. Of course, it would be easier and faster if I had used wool or silk instead of 100% cotton. Cotton doesn't give, and sometimes it's tight on the needles.
I might have something to show tonight, already!

Ta-da! One pence jug... grecian urn coin purse... thingie. If you do this, don't do as I did and make it with cotton crochet thread (#3, for the curious). Cotton doesn't have any give, and the hardest part of this project was doing the knit-2-togethers because they were so tight on the needles. I'm going to write up simplified instructions for a simliar pence jug project, and if the site (and Mags) allows, I'll make it into a PDF and put it up for anyone who wants it. HMSCody

It is lovely! I like it better than the original with all the beads because it is hard to see the detail of the knitting. Very nice.

That is a lovely piece of work Cody ... and it's just 3 1/2" tall so the instructions say.
One tip given me by my mom was this; when your knitting becomes a bit difficult because the needles 'stick', run the empty needle back and forth through your hair a few times. The bit of hair oil fixes the problem PDQ.

Cody that is great! I can see it in a silk thread ... with muted colors. Just wish I had the patience!! ~Phizz

It's so purty!!! I'm utterly rubbish on double-pointeds (circular and straights keep me happy) but I might give it a go!!
