We had a question in the S.O.S. forum about the ships of the Hornblower films. I wanted to get the thread started though I don't have all the info to hand right now, so the knowledgeable ones may feel free to chime in and fill in the spaces for me. In all of the films, the battle scenes were done with fairly large remote-control ship models. If they were making them now, no doubt it would all be CGI, but they did a pretty good job with the models IMO. Perhaps someone can post an image? If not, I'll try to find one later. (I'm thinking of the ones of the guys with the remotes standing in the tank with the models.) Here is some info from Wikipedia: Anyway, knowledgeable ones please to join in.

The Caroline and the Indefatigable are real ships. Forget the real name of the Caroline, but she is anything like the Grand Turk, she went through a name change, too. I have some pictures from when I was there with them in March 2000, that I will post later.

The Grand Turk was sold to a French company a few years ago and is now called L'Etoile du Roy, and its home port is now Saint Malo in Brittany. Initially its home port was St Katherine's Dock in London, then it moved to Whitby, which is where mmt, Derry and I saw it. Here is its website.

The models of Indefatigable and Papillion were sold to a maritime museum (I want to say in Scotland but I don't have that information at hand at the moment) during the auction of Hornblower props several years back. I have no idea what happened to the standing set that "played" Renown. There was an HH2 interview posted on the old A&E boards at one point which indicated that the studio was hanging on to it so that it would be available to play one of Hornblower's later ships (which hints that, at one point at least, they were looking to Hornblower episodes beyond Hotspur).

usHHan, the ship models went to a museum in Eyemouth in the Scottish Borders (somewhere on the east coast) and I was lucky enough to see them before they were sold, having been present at the auction; though I don't recall if I managed to get any pics. (Psst, LizMc - any boat bigger than a rowing boat is 'she' not 'it'. HH would be horrified at their being referred as if they were inanimate objects... ) SF

I've got pics from the auction somewhere around here but in numerous computer "moves", I find that my files are scattered all over the place. However, here are some pics I did manage to track down that will give folks an idea of the scale:

This is a good, informative thread. I hope it keeps going. I asked the question about he ships on the guest thread as jib boom but registered as keelhauled. I liked the pictures of the model Indefatigueable. Next time I watch the series, I'll see if I can figure out which is the model and which is the real ship. I'm hoping the two schooners that they sank were models. Can't tell in the film but they sure looked real. Capt. Pellew referred to the other schooner (Caroline) as a brig, but in the film she was a topsail schooner. I guess there weren't any brigs available. I appreciate all the info and comments and look forward to more.

( keelhauled: Hint: If there aren't any people in view aboard, chances are really good it's a model... ) The level of detail they put into those models was amazing - I remember being in awe at all the tiny tiny belaying pins on the one model whose masts were rigged (the auction location was an old Nissan hut, and they could only actually show one model rigged due to the lack of height. k If you can get your hands on the book The Making of Hornblower, you will get a lot of background information about the series. It only covers the first 4 films, but it talk about the models, filming locations, costumes, etc.......
If I remember correctly, the name of the ship playing the Caroline was the Julia.

That book is hard to get now! I have a copy, but bought it when the first series was being shown. And yes, usHHfan, that's exactly the photos I was thinking of! ETA: I thought it was hard to get. I guess not. I think it was at one time, though. I seem to vaguely recall that the Grand Turk (she will always be the Grand Turk to me... L'Etoile du Roy indeed) was also used for the Papillon, but they put a different nameplate on her. Or maybe it was one of the other full-size ships.

I believe it's mentioned on the Grand Turk website that she served as both the Indefatigable and the Papillion in the series.

Yes, the Grand Turk was painted differently on each side to play both ships......that meant she was firing on herself in several scenes.......

Follow-up question: What about the set/ship(s) used in CAPTAIN HORATIO HORNBLOWER? I haven't looked it up yet. Just wondering if anyone already has the info?
Yours Aye,
Diane
PS Excellent thread here, Mags!
