Another vote here for a books forum, so lots of different books can be talked about! There are some very diverse tastes in books here among our group, so a general book forum should cover just about everyone's interests. I'd vote for a pets forum, too! Maybe a place to talk about hobbies as well (other than crafts)? For example, I'm into kayaking, cycling, motorcycles, gardening, and a bunch of other stuff, and I bet a lot of other people here have some pretty interesting pastimes I think many of us would enjoy hearing about and discussing. Just a thought -- and thank you for asking what we all think!

The only thing I would say about having loads of subforums is that every lively issue you take out of OffTopic reduces the value of OffTopic, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The OT board will get quieter, but it will be easier to find the things we really want to get involved in. I agree Harry Potter isn't going to be buzzin' again like it was while the films and books were coming out regularly, so it seems it won't be needed as it was in the past. Yes for the others. Definitely an Austen thread. Jane has very special place in our Hornblower world and there always seems to be plenty to say about her. Tolkein, yes there's plenty to say about that, while The Hobbit is ongoing. Crafts - plenty of us are keen to post our endeavours and share the vibe on that one. Fitness and nutrition - very useful, and also a bonding forum. A lot of help and support on those threads! Sport - always something going on to talk about, and for people who have no interest in sport it's tucked out of the way in its own forum. I wouldn't create specific threads, though... "The Tennis Thread", "The Baseball Thread", because some topics within a sport deserve a thread to themselves. It's nice to have a whole thread for the Football (Soccer) World Cup, for instance, or Wimbledon or the Olympics. I think it would be better to have a Sport subforum, but let the threads emerge as the events unfold, sortof organically... an ongoing season thread for a regular sport, perhaps, and a one-off for a big event, like the Commonwealth Games or Test Cricket. Just a thought. Critters... pets, wildlife, nature... all for it. Books... definitely. Birthdays and celebrations... has always worked. If we do have all these subforums, though, it will spread the posts out, and make it less easy to see all the interesting stuff at a glance for those who feel like a browse. I don't see that as a problem, but I hope it won't put others off who have less time than me. On the other hand, it might actually appeal to people with less time, as they can go direct to their specific interest forums. Thanks for all the hard work and deliberations, Mags! PTP

I've been thinking about it a bit and I've come to some of the same conclusions as PTP.
The problem with having separate forums for everything is that it gets too scattered. The subforums were each started for one of two reasons: either discussion of that particular subject was taking over the first page of the O/T forum (and in some cases annoying people who weren't interested in that particular topic), or because we wanted to encourage discussion on that particular topic--the craft forum and fitness forum fall into the last category, the rest into the first. So I'm hesitant to just make a bunch of forums willy-nilly when there hasn't been an issue on the forum, because with a new forum, we already have a lot of empty boards, and I don't want to put up electronic fences around the topics. I mean, there's nothing stopping anyone from discussing pets or any other hobbies on the forum already, except maybe they didn't think of it.
This is what I'm thinking for O/T subforums:
Tolkien Crafts Fitness and Nutrition Books Sports (without necessarily prescriptive threads for each sport...we'll let it develop organically) Birthdays
We'll see how things go and make adjustments as necessary. If any of the forums turn out to be a bust, we'll just migrate any topics back into O/T.
Sound good to everyone?

Sounds fine to me. Would we have an Austen forum in England Expects, or will we discuss Janeism as and when and where the need arises without a dedicated forum? (Either will be ok by me). PTP

Discuss Jane as the mood strikes. You know I'll never object. ;-) If it starts to take over, I'll make a subforum.

I finally got around to setting up the subforums. These are it for now. Nothing is written in stone, and we can add and subtract in the future. But I think these are the best ones for now. I've also moved some threads around, trying to place them in the proper forum. Please don't take it personally if I moved one of your threads. PM me if you have any questions. <3
