It's either an experienced Hornblower philosophizing on general Naval tactical reality to some junior, or, a youngish Hornblower being lectured to by a senior, who makes an informed observation about the technological context of Naval combat systems in the early 1800's (I suspect the latter).
The scene takes place (I believe) on the quarterdeck of a warship in sight of the French coast. The gist of the dialogue thus:
"If all action took place in range of a shore battery, we'd need nought but frigates in the fleet"
My apologies for the lame attempt at mimicking Forester's prose, but you get the idea. This is my first post to this forum, and I am eager to locate the source of this quotation. Flame me if it seems appropriate, I've been around since the days of BBS's and have a very thick skin =]

Welcome aboard dalnz. We are always glad to answer questions or join discussions on all things Hornblower.
Things are a bit slow at the moment on the forum so it might take a bit to get your answer.

Thank you! Didn't mean to seem combative, but wasn't sure if I'd be unintentionally treading on any toes. I've encountered fan groups that were quite, shall we say, hidebound, about appropriate behaviour. Glad to be on board! No particular urgency on the answer, it's nice to see that people post. Sometimes forums like this get started and then fade away.

Hi Dalnz, and welcome!
I haven't read all of the books, so I have no idea of the who/where/when of the quotation. Sorry.
But, it does make me wonder, and I don't mean to digress from your quest... what type of ship did Hornblower prefer? Was it the bigger the better or the fastest the finest? (analysis by alliteration)

Welcome Aboard!
Sounds like a book quote to me. Can't place it in any of the mini-series or the movie. Good luck! We do like these types of challenges though.
Yours Aye,
Diane

Yours Aye, Diane It's definitely from the books. It is only dawning on me that a lot of the context here is related to the movie/miniseries/etc. DaLnz

It would seem that way. However, a number of people have read the books.
All the best.
