I have occasionally wondered over the years about the vagaries of fate that resulted in Ioan, who was the star of Hornblower and obviously a fine actor, not ending up with A-list work here in the States while co-star Jamie Griffith and homeboy Matthew Rhys, both also fine actors, did. Turns out it might not have been fate. Apparently Alice Evans was one of the scores of women whom Harvey Weinstein propositioned. He tried to get her to go off with him at a Cannes hotel during the film festival in 2002. She refused. Ioan had screen-tested for a Miramax film that same morning in New York and things were looking good for getting the part. As she was scrambling to get away Weinstein said “Let’s hope it all works out for your boyfriend,” Neither Alice nor Ioan was ever considered for a Weinstein project again. The big Miramax films in 2003 were Kill Bill volume 1, Master & Commander, and Cold Mountain. I wonder if Ioan might have been slated to play Stephen Maturin or Tom Pullings. www.vulture.com/2017/10/alice-evans-pens-essay-about-rejecting-harvey-weinstein.htmlOther notorious film industry sleazes in attendance that year were Roman Polanksi, who won the Palm d'Or for The Pianist, and Woody Allen who got a lifetime achievement award. Ick!

I've also wondered about what factors affected Ioan's career over the past several years. I remember saying that if Ioan was ever on stage in the West End I'd be on the first plane to London. Who would have guessed that Benedict Cumberbatch would become the international star he is now? (Actually, I did buy a ticket for Hamlet when they went on sale a full year before the play premiered at the Barbican.)
Century City (remember it?) was a brilliant series set in Los Angeles in the 'near future' and dealt with subjects that are in the news now ..... nano particles, for one. It lasted less than a season. Surely a viewing public that embraced Battlestar Galactica could accept Ioan as a lawyer? And Viola Davis has gone on to do exceptional film work.
Now that you've mentioned Master and Commander, Sandra, and much as the casting was spot on, I might just see Ioan's face as Lt. Pullings.

Perhaps one of the reasons we all loved the Hornblower series so much was that the integrity of the cast was apparent in their acting.

I am very glad that he did stick up for Molly Ringwald. Shakespeare in Love was nearly ten years after Strike it Rich; what a miserable grudge-bearing b@stard Weinstein is The fact that Lindsay and Ringwald were cast as husband and wife when she was was 21 and he was 39 is, of course, a whole 'nother Hollywood issue.

Oh. My. God.
That totally explains why such a talented pair have been so outside of things. I wonder if now things might change for them?
