Byron!!! Woof woof Lady Barbara!! Here's dear Arthur, Duke of W, crossing the Pyrenees. Prince of Orange on the left (and I think it's Lord Fitzroy Somerset on the right)

I've always had a soft spot for Sir Arthur. *sigh*

Arthur W is very slurpable but I've always been rather fond of his brother elder Richard, 1st Marquess Wellesley (oh, how it must have rankled just to be an Irish marquess when your little brother was a Duke!). Anyway, here is his lovely portrait by Lawrence. I really dig that black stocking black slipper combo (see my sexy diplomat above for more of the same) but Richard takes it to the next level by flashing (with great pride) his diamond encrusted Garter just below his left knee. And just to spoil you, here's Richard W some time before, as Governor-General of India. The emeralds in his St Patrick's Star came from the Tippoo Sultan's jewels.....

How can you not love 'Gentleman Johnny' Burgoyne? He elopes, writes popular plays, is loved by his men and fights (not very successfully) some colonists?

I can really see the family resemblance between Richard and Arthur

I can really see the family resemblance between Richard and ArthurEven though Richard lacks Arthur's truly fabulous nose!!! My gentleman companion (who studies this period) always says you can spot Arthur in any political cartoon of the 1820s or 1830s not matter how badly drawn just by 'tall chap with huge nose'...... For your evening treat, here's Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint-George. Great equestrian, famed fencer, and hugely prolific composer (look up all his many works). There was a very jolly documentary some years back called 'Le Mozart Noir' on him. Why they haven't made a rip-roaring film about him escapes me..

Ahhh...a prototype for our Captain Jack Aubrey!!
In a matter of fact I had Horatio Hornblower ( or Ioan in particular) in mind: Attractive, dark curls, pale skin, a slender body and a dimple,...
I have to admit that I never read O'Brien's novels. So I can't really tell about Jack Aubrey (although I read that he originally was kind of based on William Hoste).
But didn't Russell Crowe portray Aubrey? And aren't Mr. Crowe's looks quite au contraire to Captain Hoste's precious features and body?

I'm getting a "Mr. Gerrard, the gunner from Captain Horatio Hornblower, RN" vibe from this. He was always sprawled across the scenery like that. And I mean that in the best possible way.

I always liked Gerard a lot - and I mourned him even more than I mourned Bush. The book-Hornblower himself wasn't very cute - remember "Beat to Quarters": Hornblower stripped off his wet shirt and trousers and shaved naked before the mirror. The face he regarded in the glass was neither handsome nor ugly,..
HH always envied Gerard a little bit because of his looks and slenderness. And Gerard himself always was aware about his looks - remember when he told about Lady Barbara? That even HE wasn't able to land at her?? Kind of arrogant, but he always made me smile.

Well, that is what Wikipedia said is what I picked up on. Maybe it was the 'daring do' that Russell depicted.
Hoste & Ioan do resemble one another.
I too mourned for Gerard. Not a word was said about his demise in the movie.

Hoste may go on the dead heroes file. He is definitely gushable.
For Gregory Peck's HH, I adore Gerard. He's part of the reason I like watching that version.
