Not written by CS Forester, but a new author has taken up the pen (or keyboard as may be). The Jamaican Affair of 1805 is an ebook written by John Mahon, approved by the Forester sons, and is available for Kindle and Kobo. The writeup on Chapters says ....The stirring action begins where the unfinished last Hornblower adventure (Hornblower during the Crisis) ends.
****spoiler****
Hornblower travels as a spy disguised as a servant through Spain attempting to carry out the orders of the First Lord of the Admiralty. After a short spell in Portugal where newly invented spinnaker sails are fitted to his ship he's off to Jamaica to protect the island against a possible French invasion by four ships loaded with Napoleon's soldiers. Several attractive women interfere with his conscience as he carries out his duty; his wife has a interlude with Lord Nelson.
(I have just noticed that quote box and managed to delete the words in it but can't figure out how to get rid of the box itself. Makes no never mind anyway to the post but it's bugging me.)

What is it with the recent fascination to continue series with much-loved characters written by long-dead authors? Holmes, James Bond, now Hornblower.
It'll be interesting to see if Mr Mahon as good a grasp of HH and the period as CS Forester (I mean, despite Forester's momentary lapses at times, he did pretty well - and he didn't have all the resources to hand that Patrick O'Brian and later authors have had, what with places like the National Maritime Museum barely being thought of, let alone open, during his lifetime.)

I can't find the ebook anywhere. Where is it available to purchase?
Paid tie-ins have a long history in publishing--look at all the Star Trek and Star Wars books. Richard Castle "writes" books--in other words, there are books published purported to be by the fictional star of the program "Castle." It's all a cousin to fan fiction.

No, my phone is a very old, steam-driven Nokia. I knew one day the technology would get away from me. Thanks for the Google link. Not so comfy, but at least I can read it. Maybe someday it will become available in paperback. Do you think it will become a film starring Ioan! PTP

I'll give the book a try. Who knows, I may be one of the few who thinks it's not bad.

I am half way through the book and enjoying it immensely.. I read only a bit at a time so as not to finish too soon because it's a wonderful story that follows on more closely to the TV films than Hornblower and the Crisis. Horatio is still his angsty-self and manages to find re-kindled romance in some odd situations.
The best action takes place at sea and Horatio demonstrates his growing abilities in seamanship and tactics. In the intervening years since his examination for lieutenant he has also taken to heart Lt. Bracegirdle's advice on the treatment of his crew.
I suppose if a reader is a Forester purist this ebook won't suit. I'm happy to have Horatio on the move again giving the French a hot foot in the Caribbean. I hope Mahon gives Horatio another adventure soon.

I'm about halfway through the book.
It starts kind of slowly, but picks up and becomes a pretty good read, at least in my opinion.

HMSCody I felt the same Cody. As far as I'm concerned I can hear Foresters "voice" within the story. I think this author did an excellent job with the plot, and will say so in my review at Amazon. I am not disappointed at all. My only question is does anyone think he will write more "Hornblowers" to go along with the books? Someone reviewing it said they didn't believe for a second that his wife would "morph" into such an independent woman who wrangles a way to spend time with him, and I say that is totally believable, as I was a military wife and had to learn new skills for coping and becoming independent when my husband (who can totally be over bearing and take charge of every occasion) left for months/years on end. That the reviewer doesn't think Maria can grow and become a strong woman away from Horatio is bullcrap. I love that the story has him back in his old stomping grounds and dealing with a situation that goes beyond what he set out to do. Am anxious to see how it ends. Biki

Biki, I don't care that Maria morphs. I like her new character much better than the old one, and find her believable.
The book might not be everyone's cup of tea (especially the purists) but I'm having a good time with it. But I'm a forgiving soul.

I'm a forgiving soul as well, but just read an incident with Maria last night that kind of extends the bounds of what is believable. hahahahaha! You will know what I mean when you reach that part, it's at about 82% spot on my kindle. I was like....haaa hummmm....
