Hi everyone
I'm trying to finalize dates for this year's con in St Augustine. Normally when we do a warm weather location, you hold the con in October. But St Augustine gets very busy in October with other groups and I don't want to be there if the town is going to be overrun with other visitors.
The possible dates I'm look at are the 3rd weekend in Sept or the 1st or 2nd weekend in October. Again I have to check on what other groups are coming in October.
I'm at a new job so I'm at the bottom of the totem pole for picking vacation dates. I wanted the last weekend in September but my supervisor shot that down. I've been tentatively approved for the 3rd weekend in September. Still I'm going to check October. I now also have to check with the hotel on new dates. Luckily I have 2 good hotels to pick from in case the final dates aren't available for my first choice.
I wanted to see what your preferences are. Mind you, it might not make a difference in the end thanks to my employer. Technically I'm at a long term per diem job so who knows what could happen between now and then. (That's what kills me about changing my dates - I keep getting told temp to perm at some point)
So let me know. You can select up to 2 weekends. If you do choose 2, you can post your order of preference in the thread. Also if you reaallly want the last weekend in Sept, post it here too. Just in case something changes in my employment ( I'm let go, another job, etc)
Just a reminder, the last weekend in Sept and first weekend in October are Jewish holidays (Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur).
Thanks

Anytime in September is okay for me. I might not be able to come the second weekend in October. Anything else is fine.
I mentioned this in a PM to you when we were setting up the forum, but here's for everyone else: speaking for the gang from the north (where as I type it is snowing AGAIN), I kind of like extending summer by going somewhere a little warmer in late October. I don't know how everyone else feels about that, though. And of course we have to consider your work schedule.
ETA: Of the choices given, I would prefer September.

Nice timing! I was just trying to rouse my fellow Floridians over the weekend by reminding them that HH2014 was going to be in St. Augustine! Pam, Gayle and possibly PJ (she may be back in Florida by then).
Any of those weeks works for me. I usually take the majority of my vacation in the Fall (my anniversary date at the firm is October 22, so my vacation year goes from October 22 to October 21). Hopefully there would not be any issues covering my desk on any of these weeks. Just as long as I get my request in as early as possible (can only put in 6 months prior to time requested).
Once the dates are set, I'll let the other Florida gals know so they can get it on their calendars.

Any of those dates works for me but I'll double check with Mr. Ship, he showed interest in joining us this year... possibly.

I have to check on some work responsibilities, but of these choices, September is likely to be best for me. But I really like the QM's idea about late October as well.

For the last 3 weekends of October:
Weekend number 3 (starting 15th or 16th) is the weekend of Bikerfest. The town is crawling with motorcycle folks.
Weekend number 4 (starting 22 or 23th) is not available to me. Someone else has as vacation time.
Weekend number 5 ( starting 30th going into November) is Halloween. I'm thinking the town will be overrun. Since it is the oldest city in the US there are a lot of ghost tours and things like that going on. I can check with the hotel/visitors center but I'm guessing it will be crazy.
I'll check into it. But would you want to deal with all those other people? Plus I'm sure the hotel rates will go up. Still, I'll inquire.
When I've spoken to people in the past it seems late October doesn't work for some people. I guess as you get closer to Thanksgiving some folks seem to have trouble taking time off. No weekend will be perfect for everyone but I'll try my best.

I am gain for anything. I just have to tell work. I like Mags idea - you get a bit of summer before winter starts. As for the Halloween, that may be cool. I would love to see if the locals are as colorful as some of the people from my home town. :-)

No, you'll never make everyone happy! It was just a suggestion--if it can't work, then it can't work. I don't think we want to share with the bikers.

I have to admit, Halloween weekend does have a certain appeal. It would be fun to be together as a group for the holiday.
We are DEFINITELY NOT doing Biker weekend! Not that all bikers are bad but I remember reading some hotel reviews from people who were in town that week. I think they blamed the hotel for the Bikers' behavior. A bit rowdy to say the least.
Work is being a bit of a pain. There's one week were a few people have the same week off. But when I wanted to be off the last week of Sept and only one other person had off I didn't think it would be an issue. I was told no. I inquired about another week that was clear on the calendar and was told no. Unless someone asked for that week and the calendar hadn't been updated. One of the regulars at work told me in the past the per diem workers didn't have to work around the vacation schedules of the regular workers. Our schedules were separate. Apparently things have changed.

Seconding Mags again, do what works for you, Madame Captain. We had the Mystic con when we did because it fit in nicely with my brother's wedding.
It turns out I could probably do the first weekend in October, but the second weekend is out for me. The first half of my biggest project of fall term starts on the 14th.

Yeah, you do not want to be in the middle of biker weekend. Let alone the traffic jams, it is also loud and prices tend to go up for hotels, certain sure. I went to one in Daytona once. Never again!

For totally selfish reasons, I prefer mid to end of October/early November...only because we'll be on the damp foggy island west of Ushant September 27th for Nigels' daughter's wedding... her second, which was supposed to be a small family affair in May or June, but she went all Bridechilla and hired a wedding planner. But yeah, what the others said about not being able to please everyone... do whatever works best. We hope to be able to swing it somehow.
(Nige would vote for the biker weekend, so I won't tell him about it).
Good luck, Captain!

I only prefer September because it will be hot here in Vegas and going to St. Augustine would be a nice break from the heat! But I am open to any of the weeks posted! Thank you for hosting all this! I remember the fun (ahem) I had with the Tempe Convention. Good luck!
