We are a small enough group at this point that we might fit in a suite if it has a big enough living area. You might want to consider that Sueb.

Thanks for the tip. I don't think I'll have a problems. I'm probably going to be leaving after lunch, so I won't hit any kind of rush hour either leaving St Augustine or going into Charleston. It's about 3 hours between the cities. If I get into Charleston around 3 or 3:30 I should miss rush hour. Never been to Charleston before so I don't want to drive into the city in the dark.
I already know I'm going to have to make at least one more trip back into St Augustine. I'm not going to be able to see everything I want in 2 days. How much time I have on Monday will depend on when I get there. If I decide to board the pets the earliest I can drop off is 7:30 am. Debating whether to board, get a pet sitter, put with my Mom, etc.

Actually I'm looking into the suites as well. Some of the older Mom and Pops have suites that are a nice size and they are much more reasonable than the chains. But of course they don't have as many amenities as the chains so its a trade off. I'm going to be seeing a lot of places before I decide. How many were we in Philly? We had a nice size group there.

The beauty of going north on US 17 towards Charleston is that you will get to the hotel before you have to get back on any major interstate (I-26 or I-526). Last time I went up there (to meet PJ) I got there pretty quickly and then hit dead stop traffic veering onto the interstate from US 17 towards North Charleston, which was where our hotel was.

@sueb - not sure exact number of people in Philly - we filled two round tables in the conference room. There was no more than 20 - so account for about that many. I think I did my figuring on 24 people, but I think we can surmise between 16 and 24 people attending.

The hotel folks in St Augustine aren't as nice as they were in Key West. They don't want to negotiate at all with me on meeting space! Some aren't even returning my calls for a proposal. I think its because we're a small group. I ran into the same problem in Philly. If I were doing it again, I would take a different approach. Just say, "We need a room block" and then separately, "we need to rent a conference room for four days." Don't ever say the word "Convention" because then their brains go, "KA-CHING!" I'm still pissed off about being charged $75 to play cards in the breakfast room. I should have told her to stuff your breakfast room somewhere uncomfortable forget it. ETA--I think we had 18 altogether. I've blocked out a lot. LOL. ETA the second: what weekend were you thinking of? Hopefully not the first second weekend in October... (ETA the third: The JASNA annual meeting is Oct. 10-12 and I'm more or less committed to going. I am proposing a breakout talk, so that would definitely commit me if it is accepted.)

Considering how many headcounts I did, I should really remember the number. I think it's 17, actually. 17 or 18, definitely.

Haven't decided on a weekend yet. Maybe last weekend in Sept or first weekend in Oct. I was told to avoid weekend of Oct 16 -19 because there's a yearly biker convention in town. I don't know if I want to go into the end of Oct because a lot of folks can't seem to make it then. First weekend in Oct is Jewish Holidays. I could do the last weekend in Sept though historically Sept is the height of hurricane season. But I don't think St Augustine has taken a direct hit since 1964. They had an "indirect" in 1979. Still if anything comes towards Florida a large area is affected. Planes may not be able to fly in just due to high winds even if its not going to hit that particular area. But with global warming I don't know if any of the old rules apply anymore. I think prices would also be less expensive if we do Sept.
I'll discuss it with the St Augustine tourism lady when I get there. Mags, you said second week of Oct is out for you? I'll probably ask everyone in Charleston what would work best and try to accommodate as many as possible.
Also, I never used the word convention. I just said we were a small social group. Not a business or corporate entity. Didn't use the "C" word.
