Tracy, Tricia and I plan on staying afterwards as well. Definitely not departing on Monday. I would say Tuesday or Wednesday would be our departure day, but that is not set in stone.
From what I remember, the restaurants down in the Inner Harbor are pretty good, especially the seafood. A friend of mine is a PT at Johns Hopkins and she took me to this little hole in the wall that had the BEST crab. OMG. Seafood heaven.

I will be hanging around after Monday - since I live in Baltimore! I will check out of the hotel probably on Sunday but can drive back and forth to meet up with whoever is staying longer. Girls, one thing about the restaurants AT the Inner Harbor - they are way more expensive than the neighborhood joints - and the food is even better at the neighborhood establishments. That's why I'm doing research on restaurants and pubs. We have GREAT pubs, especially in Fell's Point and also in South Baltimore, not far from Fort. McHenry. I am so excited that you all will be in my hometown! Let me know if there are things you want me to research to help out! (I just had THE best oyster stew at a little restaurant in South B'more last week. See my post a page back. Just cuz it's at our Inner Harbor don't always mean it's the best place to go!)

I looked in google maps to see how far away the airport is from the area where we'll be staying. About how long does it take to get to the airport? I already booked my flights, I am just curious about it. $216 baby!!

I looked in google maps to see how far away the airport is from the area where we'll be staying. About how long does it take to get to the airport? I already booked my flights, I am just curious about it. $216 baby!! There is a Super Shuttle that services most hotels in the Baltimore area to/from the airport. We will strive to book a hotel that is on that route. We are finding few and far between of hotels that offer in-house shuttles anymore! $216? The cheapest I can find from O-ville is $228 so far. Still digging!

Yes, for a west to east coast flight, $216 is a great deal. I'll have to pay some baggage fees but even with those it was cheaper than all the other flights.
Thanks for the airport shuttle info.

I'm curious about the hotel you're going to pick. The Inner Harbor hotels can be expensive but maybe we can get a convention rate? Hotels outside of the harbor within the city can sometimes be dicey as far as personal safety. I don't want any mishaps in my fair city! I'm not really good at hotel research but if you find some you are thinking of, let me know, and I probably will know where they are and if they would be good choices.

Derry and I spent a week in Baltimore a few years ago while she attended a conference. If I can offer a suggestion, we stayed at the Holiday Inn, Inner Harbour which is not actually at the Harbour but on W. Lombard Street between S. Eutaw and Howard Streets. The Harbour is about 15 minutes' walk.
When we arrived at BWI we shared a taxi to the hotel with another girl but still paid a pretty expensive fare each. On my way back to the airport, however, I took the light rail which passes down Howard Street and goes directly to the airport; the ride was a lot shorter than the taxi and cost me only $1.00-something.

Oh my. I don't want to diss my own fair city, but I would not recommend the Holiday Inn that was mentioned. NOT in a good area, even though it is in walking distance of the Inner Harbor. I myself would rather pay more for a hotel room than worry about being accosted, mugged, etc. Sorry to sound negative about my city, but it IS a major East coast city and there are plenty of ne'er-do-wells hanging around downtown Baltimore looking for tourists to rob. I honestly am not kidding! Take it from a Baltimore native. I have not been to the harbor for a few months but I could go down there in the next week and check the hotels there. Honestly, a central location like the harbor seems like the best things for activities/touring like USS Constellation, Fell's Point (water taxis leave right at the inner harbor), National Aquarium, even Ft. McHenry which is only about 15 minutes from the inner harbor. You gals who are organizing, let me know the names of some hotels you are thinking of and I will gladly do a reconnaissance of the areas! I want everyone to feel safe in my city!

mmt: you are right in that our light rail system does go to BWI/Thurgood Marshall Airport. A lot cheaper than a taxi but can be cumbersome with luggage.Still, a much better deal than taxis. Since I live in Baltimore, I would have no problem taking some of you who are staying later out to the airport on that Monday or Tuesday. It would be my pleasure to help you out!

On our visit it didn't occur to either of us that there were areas in Baltimore that are not as safe as others although that can be said about any city. Somewhat jokingly my kids said, "Didn't you watch The Wire, mom?"
I really enjoyed my visit to the B&O railroad museum and we spent most of a day at Fort McHenry where we were the only visitors.

I say forewarned is forearmed when traveling in cities! That's why I want everyone to be safe in my hometown! Now, I just realized that we have a free shuttle service within the city. One of the routes is from the Inner Harbor to Fort McHenry. I took it when we had our Star-Spangled Spectacular back in September. It was great and easy to catch. It also goes to Fell's Point. But I took the water taxi. And the name of my particular boat I was on? The "Indefatigable"!! (I'm sure I spelled that wrong!) Maybe we will be on that boat during our Baltimore get together! Oh, here is the site about the Charm City Circulator, our free shuttle service: www.charmcitycirculator.com/

We saw on the Indefatigable back in 1999. All of us, including me, gave a big fan girl scream, to which the water taxi operator yelled - No screaming on my boat! He was an old coot anyway.
I have been to the inner harbor many times and I will say that Baltimore is like any city. There are bad (not safe) parts and good (safe) parts. The MAIN thing you need to do is keep your eyes and ears open and don't look too touristy.
