Like mmt and Derry, we have stayed at the same Holiday Inn while attending conventions. We never did have any problems with safety. Jim, who tended the bar in the lounge, always remembered everyone in our group from the years before, and remembered our drinks of choice. I thought that was impressive.
Down the street from the Holiday Inn was a joint named the Wharf Rat, that served a variety of their own brews (Oliver). It was populated by the conventioneers. And they had several pool tables that saw many interesting styles of play (mostly inebriated). I won twenty bucks off Nigel and a Scotsman. Anyway, I believe they have since moved over to Fell's Point (not sure about the pool tables, though).
Thank you, Patty for your tips and offers. And thank you Bucky, for keeping us posted.

The MAIN thing you need to do is keep your eyes and ears open and don't look too touristy. We're doomed then. There is no way a group of 15-20 people all wearing stripey shirts can look anything BUT touristy.

Hi, everyone! Excited about Baltimore. I wanted to double check dates. Sept 24 - 28, right? Will there be activities on Mon the 28th? Or will everything end on Sun night? Also, things will start Thu AM? Or Wed night? Just trying to figure out how many days to take. Can't wait to see everyone. Sorry if I'm asking questions that have already been answered. I poked through the threads and didn't find anything. Probably not looking carefully enough. Take care!!

Officially, the con will start Thursday morning but we believe people will arrive the day before to get settled. Monday morning we thought about doing a group breakfast but not official - we may do another poll to see the interest. Those that are staying to explore can all confer and see if they want to do thing as a group past Monday. It seems a lot of people are staying past Monday. Tracy and I will hopefully have more solid info once she gets back from her vacation.

Thanks, Bucky! I figured I'd come Wed night at least, maybe earlier. So, looks like try for later in the day flight home on Mon. OK with me.
Take care!

I tried to create a separate area for Baltimore under Fandom Events but I guess I don't have enough privileges. Should we at least change the name of the thread to make it easier for people to find info about Baltimore?
BTW, I decided not to renew my hosting service so hornblowergatherings.com is no longer available. Unfortunately I don't have much time to do anything with it anymore. Perhaps others can post news in other sites.

Mags contacted me about starting the official HH2015 thread so she'll get it started.
Thanks SOTL for doing the sites all these years! I hear you -- I let my HH music parody/A&E message boards site go a long time ago. That was fun but a lot of work at times. I think we will do a basic website for the con. Once we get all the info I will get it up and running.

That's weird--you should have privileges, sotl. Bucky and Saucehead will let me know when it's time, so I can do it, but you should be able to. ETA: Bucky, if you want a simple site for free, maybe Weebly? I haven't tried it, but I've seen some decent sites made with it. And it seems to be quite simple to use. If you just want one page or need to host a few docs, registration forms and that sort of thing, let me know and we can figure it out. I'm happy to host stuff on my site, or we can set up publicly accessible documents on Google Docs.

Maybe I am just being dumb and didn't find where I need to go to create it.

Hmm. I feel like I'm putting the poo poo on the Holiday Inn as the con hotel. It is not my cup of tea but that is just me, I guess. I worked right near there and had problems on a daily basis with people coming up and begging for money, harassing me in the parking garage, etc. near where I worked. I had to put up with that for 10 years working near there. I am a very streetwise gal and have been offering my advice because I don't want anyone to have a bad experience here in my hometown. But if you want me to stop posting about Baltimore safety, I will. I just am worried the hotel that is picked might not be safe for you all!

I have the website started with the information that we have ready.
As for the hotel, we've got a list and I will probably sojourn in the next month to meet Saucy up there to tour the hotels and sites. As I remember, Jamers said that the original hotel we stayed at for HH1999 is no longer the same name, right? That was a neat hotel, especially with the bar to accommodate our entire group at one table (anyone remember our waiter, Okelo? He never wrote down a single drink order and kept us refreshed the entire night - very impressive!). But I digress ...... We have a few that are perfect, but it is just a matter of getting a decent rate that will be the issue with those locations.
We will definitely take into account all aspects of what the best choice will be - group rate, location, amenities (pool party anyone?!), breakfast choices, etc.

So, would you want me to meet up with you all when you come here to check the hotels? I would like to help if I can but don't know if I am being too opinionated about my hometown. Things change a lot in 10 years since your first get together here. And sometimes not for the better. I really want to help make our get together in September memorable. Let me know if you would like me to meet you all here somewhere. I just want things to go well!

Things change a lot in 10 years since your first get together here. And sometimes not for the better. I really want to help make our get together in September memorable. Let me know if you would like me to meet you all here somewhere. I just want things to go well! I think ANY big city has its bad sections and its good sections. My city is Philadelphia and I will tell you that there are many parts of the city that is bad. My second city is New York City and may I say that most of the city is dangerous? BUT - that being said - WHENEVER you are in a big city you should do the following things:
1. DO NOT look scared. If you look scared, you will be the first target of the thieves. 2. Walk WITH the crowd and walk in the middle of the crowd. If the crowd walks on a yellow light, you walk with them IF they are a huge crowd of people. If you walk in the middle of the crowd, there is least amount that you will be hurt if something happens. YES, you may get pickpocketed, which leads to number 3. 3. Don't flash around your purse or money. This also attracts thieves. 4. NEVER go anywhere ALONE in the city. You must be with someone and have an eye out for anything that may bring you harm.
If you follow these, you should be all right. BUT - that also leads you to paranoia. Have these in the back of your mind at all times, but have fun.
I have been to Baltimore many times and it is just like Philadelphia. There are safe parts and not safe parts and there are expensive parts and inexpensive parts. The Inner Harbor area is known to be a safe part, especially during the day. This is where we will being having our main activities and I don't feel we should worry. It is not like we are going to be out at night after midnight.
I say, that we will be all right. We have been doing these for 15 years and all WILL be well because we will be in a group.
