I've just returned from a week away at a retreat centre and among the things going on that week was some lacemaking and enamelling on copper. I went to watch both for a while and the leader of the enamelling course was explaining the process to me - it involved glass powder and beads and firing the pieces in a kiln - and during the course of her explanation she told me that "There's something called the coefficient of expansion." I don't know how she interpreted the huge beaming smile on my face from then on... I hope she thought it was delight at her detailed explanation. Fmu

It would have been more interesting if you replied to her - I call it bloody dangerous.

Yes, it would, but I didn't want to scare the poor woman - I'd only just met her. Fmu

So when your beaming smile caused her to look at you sidelong, did you take the opportunity to clear your throat???

Nice one, FMU , it's so difficult to explain to the other person at a HH moment. Anyway the smile must have made her happy. My teenage son was two hours late for dinner. It came out he went to talk to both sides to mend a conflict between neighbours. "You shamed me" went through my head, I'm a coward in these things. I didn't dual for him, but did make him the best desert ever.

LOL, fmu! LOL, Jamers! LOL, Stacey! I think I would have done the same as Biki... burst out laughing. Oh, and here's a quick "hello" to Leadline. Long time no see. I had an HH moment in Macy's on Saturday where I spied a stripey shirt. It was in a little boutique section called "Maison Jules." So, I had to get it in honor of our Juliet. Otter

A couple of days ago I had a very uncomfortable dream about Archie getting assaulted by someone named Jack. He didn't look like Simpson in the show, but it was no doubt meant to be him. It was one of those dreams when you're watching a film, but at the same time you're standing in the middle of it. It was kind of graphic.

We're looking after a friend's hamster this week. He's not actually a very friendly hamster, having lived for a while with a crowd of students who, I fear, didn't treat him very well. But he's white and cute and as we are petless at the moment it's nice to have a little critter about the place. His name? Archie. Fmu

I am reading a new book, The Birth of the Royal Marines 1664-1802, and just came across a reference to a (Marine) Captain Archibald Kennedy.
Unfortunately for us, this is in 1759, so highly unlikely to be 'our' Kennedy making a career for himself in the Marines, but even so!

In which we encounter mystery novelist who doesn't say "what?": I'm reading and enjoying Peter Robinson's mystery series featuring DCI Alan Banks in the North of England. In the current one, he's in Whidby to interview a former cop and while he's there, he sees in the "... the yellow-and-black pattern on the hull of The Grand Turk, the ship they used in the Hornblower series. He thought about that, life at sea, with none of the complications facing him on land. But what did he know, really? He learned everything he knew about nautical life from Hornblower and the Patrick O'Brian series." The quote might not be exact, but that's the gist of it. I already really liked this series and now it's even better.

Hi All:
I was watching some COLUMBO (my FAVorite detective) videos and conclude that he gets a little queasy when it comes to heights just like our dear Horatio.
Yours Aye,
